Karimeen Mappas


Karimeen or pearl spot is the state fish of Kerala. Whether fry or pollichathu it will give a special taste to the dish because of this fish. This time it is a coconut milk based curry which can be served with appam, chapathi, idiyappam etc.


  • Karimeen / Pearl Spot – 500 gram
  • Onion – 2 , medium
  • Ginger & Garlic – 2 teaspoon,Β  crushed
  • Green chilly – 3
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chilly powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder – 2.5 teaspoon
  • Tomato – 1 medium, thinly sliced
  • Coconut milk -1.5 cup
  • Pepper powder – 1/4 teaspoon

To Marinate

  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Chilly powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Pepper powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vinegar – 1/2 teaspoon


  1. Marinate fish pieces with the ingredients and set aside for 15 minutes. Fry both sides slightly.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a wide pan. Add onion, ginger, garlic, green chilies, curry leaves and salt. Saute well until lightly browned.
  3. Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, pepper powder and coriander powder and saute forΒ  few minutes. Add sliced tomato and cook until soft. Add 1 cup coconut milk and cook.
  4. Add the fried fish pieces in the gravy and cook covered for 5 minutes.
  5. Add remaining coconut milk and mix gently. Cook for a minute over low heat. Pour a tsp of coconut oil and add a few curry leaves. Keep covered for 10 minutes.
