White Chick Peas/Vella Kadala Curry

White Chickpeas Curry

In north India it is called Kabuli Chana and the Chana Masala is a popular dish there. This is a Kerala style preparation of white chick peas. Puttu and Kadala is an awesome combination of breakfast in Kerala. Usually black chick peas are used for this. Today we can see the preparation of white chick peas. This goes well with Appam,Puttu,Idiyappam and Indian breads.

Ingredients

  • Chick peas – 1.5 cups (soaked for 6 hours)
  • Onion – 1
  • Ginger – 1″ piece
  • Garlic -4
  • Chilies – 2
  • Garam masala – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig

To Roast 

  • Coriander powder – 2 tablespoon
  • Kashmiri chili powder – 1 tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala – 1/4 teaspoon

To Season

  • Shallots – 5
  • Dry red chilly – 2
  • Curry leaf – 1
  • Garlic – 3

Preparation

  1. Add chick peas, chopped onion,garlic,crushed ginger,green chilly , garam masala, curry leaves and salt with enough water in a pressure cooker. Cook in medium flame until peas are done.
  2. Take a ladle of the cooked peas and mash it well.
  3. Warm  coriander powder, turmeric, chili and  garam masala  in a pan. Turn off fire, and stir and toss further so that  masala won’t burn.
  4. Open the pressure cooker when pressure is down, add the roasted powders and bring to a boil. check for salt.
  5. Add the mashed kadala to the gravy and boil till the desired consistency reached.Turn off fire.
  6. Heat oil in a pan, pop mustard and add the dry red chilies,curry leaves and fry well. Add the sliced onions, when they start to brown, add the garlic cloves and fry further. Add this to the curry and mix well.
