Oats mainly eaten as porridge, as an ingredient in breakfast cereals and in baked goods. The high fiber content of oats helps to remove cholesterol from the digestive system. Puttu is a popular brekfast in Kerala. There are lot of veg and nonveg varieties of puttu available now.Usually it is prepared with rice flour, coconut and water. Puttu maker comes in two forms, one is the normal one with cylindrical shape and other one is with round shape, used to prepare ‘chiratta puttu’. Traditionally it is made of a coconut shell, hence it is called so.
You can make puttu without puttu maker using a steamer or an idly pan. Take an idly mould, start with a layer of grated coconut and flour, layer it again and the final layer will be coconut. Steam for 10 minutes or until it is done. In a steamer, do the same thing in a bowl and steam it.
Ingredients
- Oats – 2 cup
- Grated Coconut – ½ cup
- Salt – to taste
- Water – as required
Preparation
- Dry roast oats in a non stick pan and when a nice aroma comes out from it, transfer it onto a plate.Once cooled, grind it into a fine powder.
- Transfer the oats powder into a bowl. Add salt and sprinkle water little by little and mix well.Repeat sprinkling water till the flour is wet.
- Blend the flour mix in a blender for a minute so that the flour mix becomes soft.
- In a pressure cooker boil 3 cups of water. In the puttu maker add the grated coconut and then the oats mixture. Again add grated coconut and then the oats mixture till you reaches the top. Always end with grated coconut. Cover with the lid and place it on the pressure cooker nozzle.
- Once the flour is well cooked you could see the steam coming from puttu mould.let it cook for some more time. Remove it from the pressure cooker.
- Serve it with banana or Kadala Curry.
Good one!!
